6 Ideas For a Fun New Year's Eve (At Home)

Listen up, babes! Stop what you're doing and give yourself a pat on the back for adapting, learning, and growing throughout this challenging year. 2020 has been a whirlwind, that's for sure. We took our self-care routine seriously, did countless at-home workouts, and of course, watched a whole lot of Netflix. And since we're not back to our full "normal" just yet, we'll be ringing in New Year's 2020 on the couch and making the most of it!

Here are six New Year's Eve party ideas for an at-home celebration that doesn't, well, suck:

1. Get all dolled up

2020 has truly been the year of loungewear, and we're not mad about it. But we'd be lying if we said we didn't miss going full glam every once in while. So this NYE, break out those heels, rock that shimmery cat-eye makeup you saw on TikTok, and wear some real clothes just because. Get everyone in the house on board and you'll all feel like a million bucks - pretty refreshing after a year of messy buns, right?

2. Create a "photo booth"

Consider this a part two to the above, or go for it in your pajamas - there are no rules this New Year's Eve! Put together a cute backdrop for some photo ops and have fun with it. Buy a disposable camera, or just use the flash and timer on your iPhone to get that classic photo booth feel. You can hang a bed sheet up and throw some streamers across the top, or buy a few balloons to keep it festive. Trust us, you and your crew will want to commemorate the moment you bid 2020 adieu.

3. Make a new recipe

What's a party without good food? Rather than ordering a pizza, get creative and take on a dish you've been wanting to try. There's nothing more satisfying than enjoying a home-cooked meal you tackled yourself. Or, make it a group effort and get your roommates or family to pitch in. On our list? Slow Cooker Red Wine Braised Short Rib Pasta from Half Baked Harvest, followed by @broccyourbody's Pear Smash cocktail. YUM.

4. Get chatty with conversation cards

Whether you're spending time with family, hanging with a small group of friends, or catching up over a Zoom call, it's important to connect with others in whatever way you can. Have everyone make cards with prompts on them to get everybody talking. It could be anything from "what made you laugh the most?" to the "biggest lesson you learned this year." A little reflection will help you remember how much you have to be thankful for!

5. Have a movie marathon

This one's a no-brainer...who doesn't love a good movie night? Bonus points if you make a fort out of your couch cushions to tune in from. Some of our fave films that feature New Year's Eve: Sleepless in Seattle, When Harry Met Sally, The Holiday (only for a bit, but the whole movie is a vibe), and, ahem, High School Musical (who could forget that infamous NYE duet?)

6. Create a vision board

Enter the new year with a little more clarity on your goals and dreams by creating a vision board. Grab all your magazines, pour some wine, and cut out inspirational images and words that stand out to you. Paste them onto a poster board and keep it somewhere that you'll see it throughout 2021. It'll help you carry that energy into next year, leaving 2020 behind you (good riddance)! Hello, fresh start!
